Kirby, my cockapoo, delivered her six puppies like a pro

I had a feeling that tonight would be the night that my beautiful Kirby, a cockapoo, would deliver her new little family. She had blown up lika a little balloon recently and we were thinking, any day now. But tonight was different.
She keeps wanting to go outside or hide in her new nesting spot in our bedroom closet. Upon checking, I see that her mucus plug as come off. That's a good sign.
I knew it would be tonight as suddenly all of the signs were there: panting, restlessness, pacing, discomfort - and for the first time ever, Kirby refused a treat (!!!) . I checked her temperature and, yes, it was finally 98.1 degrees - I knew we would have puppies within a few hours. It was 9:30 pm.
She seems scared and I am too. I am showing her total calm and control hoping it'll translate into a deep trust so that she'll want me to be with her in her whelping box, instead of in the damn closet where all of my shoes are piled up and it's too dark to help her.
10:06 pm: I note that she's "pushing." I put her in her whelping box. Here's a picture of Kirby in it just before the first puppy revealed itself:

Kirby is definitely acting scared. She hides under the blankets, digs like mad, pushes a little. Poor baby.

10:25pm: 1st puppy is born (we put on a green ribbon for it, this is to monitor its weight and growth). Breech birth.
10:44: 2nd puppy pushing starts.
10:47: 2nd Puppy is born. We call this one Blue puppy (blue ribbon). Breech birth.
10:53: 3rd Puppy is born. We call this one Purple puppy (purple ribbon). Head-first.
11:00: 4th Puppy is born. We call this one Brown puppy (brown ribbon). Breech birth.
At this point, since our vet said we were going to have 4 puppies because of the x-ray we took 2 weeks ago, we thought we were done, until...
11:20: 5th Puppy presents itself and is stuck already out of its sack and two little legs sticking out. I remembered NOT to pull it out but to try to get in there and tug its shoulders out. But I couldn't get in that far. I helped move Kirby's vulva as far up as I could until I got more of the puppy out (you've got 6 minutes to do this or it dies). Once some belly came out, I pulled the puppy down against Kirby's belly towards her head. You should NEVER pull a puppy outward - always against the Dam's belly towards the head. We call this one Red puppy (Red ribbon).
It isn't moving around too much so I rough it up a bit with a towel, suck out the fluids out of its mouth with the baby bulb and dry it off with a towel. It's starting to move around and voila - it's ready for milk.
This baby was the bonus, or so I thought.
I'm talking to my sister and mother on the phone, explaining the puppies' birth when I notice Kirby pushing again. I figure there's still a placenta in there... but then I see a foot. So as I'm talking to my family on the phone, out pops puppy number 6 at 11:36!
We call this one Blue polkadot puppy.
Kirby ate all of the placentas (normal) and immediately loved being a mommy. She licked them clean, ripped off the umbilical cords (I tied and cleaned them), and settled into being a mommy.

She was so pooped at this point. But she's a natural.

PUPPIES!!!

Kirby and I are both pooped
So who is the daddy of all of these cute little black cockapoos? It's Bud, a summer visitor to the Hamptons. He is identical to the following dog:

He comes out to the hamptons with his family and goes home after Labor Day. I'll have news for his human family next summer when he comes knocking at our door like he has every summer for two years now.
We will be keeping one puppy and we're so excited. More news as the puppies develop!

That’s hilarious! I love the coloring and how the puppies look. They are so adorable, and their coloring is really amazing. Dark on the outside, but if you fluff up their hair or run your fingers through it, you can see the tan just under. It’s beautiful! Muah muah!
