The Many Faces of Amy Sedaris: The Interview

Amy Sedaris is an enigma. She’s beautiful, in the seventeen magazine sense, intelligent and one of the most polite people I’ve ever known. She bakes and sells cupcakes and cheese balls, for God’s sake! But when she’s on, that is, when she’s in character, she is the most twisted person you will ever meet. She is not beyond cursing like a truck driver, wearing fat suits, painting her pretty face with bloody open gashes and black, bruised eyes; and will use anyone in her path, her family, friends, lover, even sell her soul perhaps to make people cackle till their sides split. Nothing is safe from Amy. But her brand of humor will leave you wondering about the state of the world. These piteous characters she becomes take over our collective consciousness, and we recognize ourselves. When the play, episode or story ends, her personas come across as the normal one and we are left feeling uncomfortable. We can always relate somewhere in our dark and moldy closets to the myriad of dejected qualities her characters wear like a badge of honor. Sedaris’ success for comedy is that it spotlights all of our social skills at the point of break down, that moment when we are confronted with a situation so amoral, strange, or maybe just plain crude that we have no idea what to do but laugh. And we love her for it.
Only someone this demented would have created and played Strangers With Candy’s, Jerri Blank - a former teen runaway who, after a lifetime of prostitution and drug abuse, has returned to high school as a freshman at age 46. The show was recently canceled so we caught up with Sedaris to talk about her plans for the future.
"I haven’t done anything since it ended. Cooking and cleaning. Couple of projects," she says, and adds that she’s spending quality time with her rabbit, Tattletale. "She’ll be five in February."

I waited for her at a bistro in the West Village, as she lives nearby, but it was so damn cold I was pissed I arrived too early, since they made me wait outside. She shows up exactly on time, with a little box of chocolate covered pretzels from a chocolatier I know she knows I love. I said she was sweet, didn’t I?
She’d been on The Conan O’Brien Show the night before, where she completely left Dick Clark, another guest that night, catatonic with shock. She taped her nose up (as her infamous character, Talullah) and did that white trash character and cursed till all you got was one long censorial beep after another. Dick Clark just looked at Conan, finally able to speak, and says, "TV ain’t what it used to be, is it?" I think it was the first time Dick actually looked old. Amy can do that to a person.
I told her how great she was and we talked like old girlfriends catching up over salads. Of course, with the cancellation of SWC, I was concerned and curious as to what was going to become of her.

Greg Dulli Interview Resurrected from Privy Magazine

So I find myself sitting on a toilet in an East Village bar called DBA (the watering hole of my husband's single days). I look around for some toilet paper and low and behold - what do I see? Poetry all over the walls written by hundreds of women during their powder room romps. As I'm reading away, one thing just pops out. DULLI YOU SEXY MOTHERFUCKER! and DULLI RULES! I laugh mainly because I agree and I had just talked to him a few weeks before for this article.
When I get back out to meet my friends, guess what's playing in the background? Right after hearing all of Radiohead's new Kid A, on comes the entirety of TWILIGHT as played by the TWILIGHT SINGERS (a.k.a. Dulli's side project). I go up to the bartender and say, "You've got a real Afghan Whigs following here huh?" And he says, "You better believe it." I tell him about my interview. He gives me a free drink. I love this job.
The album starts with one of the most beautiful songs of the year: the twilite kid. Dulli's breathy voice really gets to shine here and the emotions he's able to explore through it really touch the listener.
All of Dulli's work with the Afghan Whigs have been very emotional and sexy, but there is definitely something that smells of things like unrequited love, passionate nights (check out the orgasmic moans in track #3 called Clyde), yearning and loneliness in these songs. It's a mature album from a maturing Dulli. Twilight is clearly a labor of love. And from talking to Greg, he confirmed that in his thirties, he's slowing down a bit, with less womanizing and getting into trouble. I suspect the drinking is down too. Somehow, I think the music is going into a better direction, perhaps because of this.
It seems that Greg is looking to be saved. It seems that love is the only thing that can do this. Maybe I'm reading into the album too much, but Greg is looking for redemption through this emotional spewing... possibly trying to purge the lonely demons he's been heralding for too long. Is Dr. Freud in the house?

The brooding melodies are triumphant in that they truly utilize Dulli's talent at crooning, seranading, and making everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside. Many of the climactic highs of the songs feel something like mental breakthroughs and some even make you want to dance. This is a beautiful album which only gets better and better the more you listen to it. Barry White's got some competition here..
We'll miss the hedonistic, drunken partyboy, but somehow, he seems even sexier now. As a man. Would you ever have believed it? I think Greg's all grown up!

10 Year Anniversary

My ten year anniversary is fast approaching. The Islamic ceremony was on February 28, 1999 and the official NY State wedding & party was on May 2nd, 1999. We had talked for years about going to Venice for our anniversary but we decided to go to Belize as a family, with Kyle, our 6 year old, in February and get an anniversary ring as a memento. If I'm going to spend thousands of dollars, I'd rather it be for Kyle's education fund and not on an expensive trinket that goes on my finger.
That being said, I did find an inexpensive ring that I absolutely adore. I really like ice.com for jewelry because they have GORGEOUS designers and are marked down so I can afford them! The particular ring I wouldn't mind wearing, and I am not a jewelry person at all, was originally $900. It is currently marked down at $450.00.
